The first Paddington Bear book was written by Michael Bond, illustrated by Peggy Fortnum and published in the UK in 1958. Paddington Bear was born in darkest Peru - so the story goes - and turned up at Paddington Station with a battered suitcase, an old bush hat and a label round his neck requesting “Please Look After This Bear”. He likes marmalade sandwiches and cocoa, and however hard he tries to get things right he keeps getting into trouble.
